Strengthening ASEAN Risk Assessment Capability to Support Food Safety Measures Project
The expansion of ASEAN participation in international trade in food products requires confidence in the quality and safety standards of these food products. However, strong food safety programs must be supported by rigorous, scientific risk assessment. Whilst technical and scientific staff in ASEAN possess the necessary skills to conduct risk assessments they often lack knowledge and experience in the detailed procedures involved. Purpose: This project aims to build confidence in ASEAN's ability to support domestic safe food production and consumption, and facilitate international trade and competitiveness. The project provides scientific staff with training and hands on experience in the preparation of systematic risk assessments and supports more effective communication between risk assessors and risk managers. Duration: Two years, from Sept 2005 Value: A$1,200,000 Specific objectives of the project are: The identification and training of experts with relevant scientific backgrounds in the methodology of risk assessment Strengthening of existing networks at a national and regional level Improved knowledge of available data to support risk assessment and data deficiencies Project activities include: Development of a directory of risk assessors and risk managers and support for increased communication and networking. Structured training and mentoring in chemical and microbiological risk assessment methodologies including: intensive training in risk assessment methodology (for 40 participants) regional risk assessment case studies on a range of food products and risks conducted over a six month period recall workshops to review the cases studies and refine procedures. A regional workshop to identify future regional skill and data requirements. Target groups for the project include both scientific experts involved in risk assessment and policy and regulatory staff involved in risk management. All ASEAN member countries are participating in the project. The project is supervised by the ASEAN Expert Group on Food Safety and the ASEAN Secretariat in cooperation with the ASEAN Food Safety Network and the ASEAN Subcommittee on Food Science and Technology. The project is being managed by AMSAT, a non-profit development assistance management organization, with specialist technical support from Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ).
This Project is being delivered under the ASEAN Australia Development Cooperation Program - Program Stream (AADCP-PS), a A$19 million initiative of the Australian Government and ASEAN. For further information contact Jim
